ADRIAN MELLON

We are never outside the structure we observe. The sailor is never outside the sea, the painter is never outside the landscape. The work begins from that position, inside wind, surface, balance and light.
Adrian Mellon is an Irish artist, born in South Africa. His work moves between painting, sculpture, objects and built structures. It is shaped by water, light, landscape, memory, humour, movement and the physical, joyful act of making.
The work develops from drawing as a way of understanding space and structure. Many projects begin as simple drawings and evolve through material studies in wood, steel or ceramics before taking form as paintings, objects or spatial interventions.
A painting or object is not treated as an isolated element. The intention is to make work that alters the perception and balance of a space, becoming part of a larger whole.
